SMYTH SCORES 24 AND IGLESIAS FINISHES WITH DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN WIN OVER SVC
NEW LONDON, CONN.-Mitchell Women's Basketball completed the afternoon sweep of Southern Vermont College Saturday afternoon. The Pequot's defeated the Mountaineers 81-46 for their fourth win of the season (4-17). Southern Vermont leaves New London at 2-17 overall.
Southern Vermont may have scored the first six points of the game, but once Mitchell caught up five minutes in, it would be the Pequots the rest of the way. Mitchell had a 22 point advantage at the break (45-23).
Leading the way for the Pequots was sophomore Jennifer Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.) with a double-double performance. Iglesias finished with 19 points and a season high 12 assists. Freshman guard Brittany Smyth (Winsted, Conn.) scored a season high 24 points, hitting four from behind the arc. Smith also grabbed five steals in the win. Also scoring in double digits was freshman spark plug Marjory Oliveira (Waterbury, Conn.) with a career high 11 points.
Freshman Julia Fagan, a New Britain, Conn. native, turned in a monster 26 points and 17 rebounds on the way to her double-double performance for the Mountaineers. Freshman Tiarra Hall also pulled in 12 rebounds for SVC.
Mitchell will make the trek to Green Mountain College on Sunday afternoon to face the Eagles for the final time this season. Game time is 2:00 PM. In their last match up, the Eagles pulled ahead by seven in the last few minutes to win 78-17. Southern Vermont will host Saint Joseph's College of NY on Sunday for a 1:00 PM game. Mitchell will head to SVC on Wednesday, February 13th for a 6:00 PM rematch.
