NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team netted a season-high seven goals in a shutout victory over Wheelock College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Mariners (3-6-0 overall, 3-2-0 NECC) scored four times in the first half and held a commanding 36-4 advantage in shots for the match. Senior Lauren Fritsch and sophomore Alexandra Charles each scored a pair of goals to lead the offensive attack.
Mitchell got on the board in the eighth minute when sophomore Madeline Crow finished off a pass from Alexandra Mahar for her second goal of the season. Just over six minutes later, Fritsch tallied her first goal of the day after senior Rebecca Tabak and freshman Katie McBride connected on passes up the right sideline and to the center of the box.
Charles scored the final two goals of the first half. The first came on an unassisted effort in which she beat the Wheelock keeper to a ball outside the box and then fought off a defender to finish into an open net. The second came with 13 seconds remaining in the stanza on a follow-up of a shot by Tabak that was stopped near the goal line by a defender. Charles charged the net and put home the rebound to give the Mariners a 4-0 cushion at the break. It was also her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Fritsch scored just over six minutes into the second half when she was wide open in the box and was served a ball by Mahar from the right side. The goal was her fourth of the season.
Freshman Samantha Cilenti scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 61st minute after picking up a loose ball in the Mitchell offensive end and dribbling to within 10 yards of the goal before unleashing a shot into the back of the net. Less than four minutes later, she slotted a ball up the middle of the field to Mahar, who blasted a ball over the keeper and under the crossbar for her second tally of the season.
Mitchell junior Kaylee Woodford finished with a pair of saves in goal to record her second solo shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Sarah McCaffrey finished with nine saves for the Wildcats (3-11-0 overall, 1-4-0 NECC).
Prior to the contest, the Mariners honored Fritsch, Tabak, Malorie Klieber and Amanda Hernandez in a special senior day ceremony. All four players were four-year letterwinners for the Mariners and members of the 2010 NECC championship team.
Mitchell will next host Elms College on Tuesday, October 16 at 3:30 p.m.
