Late Goals Lead Women's Soccer to First Win
NEW LONDON, Conn. – A pair of goals in the 89th minute led the Mitchell College women's soccer team to its first victory of the season, a 2-1 decision over Daniel Webster College on Saturday afternoon in the New England Collegiate Conference opener for both programs.
After falling behind 1-0 in the 63rd minute, the Mariners kept pressing but didn't break through until Tiana Edwards tied the game with 1:58 to go. Just 52 seconds later, Sophie Spiller delivered the go-ahead goal that put Mitchell on top for good.
The Eagles nearly pulled out the win thanks to a second-half goal by Amanda Dargie and the solid play of goalkeeper Stephanie Evans, who finished with 27 saves in the contest. Dargie's goal was her team-leading third of the season.
After a scoreless first half in which neither side generated quality chances, Daniel Webster changed up its strategy to spark some offense. Evans got things going with long, low punts from the defensive end that repeatedly bounced over the Mitchell back line. Dargie and Megan Lewis-Taylor used their speed to chase down the ball and get off shots at the goal.
Dargie's goal was the result of such a situation, as she hustled after a ball that had bounced over a defender and into the Mitchell box. Goalkeeper Jordan Lohneiss came out to clear the ball away, but her kick deflected off the charging Dargie and found its way into the goal.
The Mariners put a lot of shots on frame in search of the equalizer, but most came from outside the 18 and were easy stops for Evans. Mitchell repeatedly settled for outside shots as the Eagles packed the box to protect the lead.
Edwards and Spiller finally put solid strikes on the ball in the waning minutes to flip the script. Edwards blasted a shot just under the crossbar from straight on for her first career goal. Spiller followed by burying a blast into the top-right corner that Evans touched with her fingertips but couldn't stop. It marked Spiller's first tally of the season and third of her career.
Lohneiss finished with three saves to earn her first career victory in goal. Mitchell held a commanding 42-9 edge in shots.
Mitchell (1-4-0 overall, 1-0-0 NECC) will next play at Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday, September 21 at 6 p.m.
