
Women's Soccer Blanks Medgar Evers
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team picked up an 8-0 victory over Medgar Evers College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Alumni Field.
Six different Mariners found the back of the net on the afternoon. Lindsey Fairbank turned in her second hat trick of the season and also chipped in an assist to lead the charge. Lindsey Robinson and Hannah Corrigan combined for Mitchell's third clean sheet of the season in goal.
Mitchell scored four goals in the first half, all in the opening 17:42 of the stanza. Fairbank kicked things off in the fourth minute with an unassisted effort to put the Mariners up 1-0. She then assisted on a goal by Michaela DeSena in the 13th, and J'Naya Kelly made it 3-0 in the 14th off a feed by Mariah Travisano. DeSena's goal was the first of her career while Kelly's was her fifth of the season.
Yasmine Mai Le capped the first-half scoring with her first tally of the season in the 18th minute off an assist by DeSena. The Mariners held a 21-2 edge in shots for the half.
Fairbank netted her second goal just 36 seconds into the second half and secured the hat trick in the 57th minute. The goals, both assisted by Samantha Kasheta, raised Fairbank's team-leading total to 10. She becomes the first Mitchell player with double-digit goals since 2011.
Robinson, who played in the field in the second half, notched her first career goal in the 68th minute on Travisano's second assist of the game. Travisano later completed the scoring with her first collegiate tally in the closing seconds of the match. Reanna Clark and DeSena each registered assists on the goal.
Jody-Ann Blanchard recorded seven saves in goal for the Cougars in the first half. Sandra Yankson replaced her for the final 45 minutes and finished with three saves. Neither Mitchell keeper was forced to make a stop in the contest.
Mitchell (4-7-0 overall) secured a winning home record with the victory. The four wins are also the most in season since 2015.
Mitchell will next play at Bay Path University on Wednesday, October 16 at 4 p.m. Medgar Evers (0-11-0 overall) returns to action at York College (NY) on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
