Women's Soccer Stumbles at Mass Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team lost by a 3-1 final at Mass Maritime Academy on Wednesday night in non-conference action.

The Buccaneers scored the game's first three goals before the Mariners finally got on the scoreboard in the 88th minute. Hannah Corrigan did the honors for Mitchell, notching her first goal of the season off an assist by Madison Nicynski.

Ariel Damery finished with a pair of goals for Maritime while Emma McNally recorded her first goal of the season on a penalty shot.

The Bucs threatened early and often but were unable to break through. Late in to the first half, the Bucs' offense moved into the attacking third, and a pass to the middle set Damery up for a shot which was denied by Yordi Slover. However, the rebound got away from the Mitchell keeper, and after Damery regained possession she dribbled clear and put a slow roller into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. The goal would be the only one of the half, and Maritime took the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Buccaneers ramped up their offensive attack. In the 61st minute, a Mitchell foul in the box allowed the Bucs an opportunity to double their lead. The referee placed the ball on the penalty spot, and McNally stepped up and fired a shot into the bottom left-hand corner to make it 2-0.

Five minutes later, with seemingly fresh legs, Damery received a pass from Sasha Alves on the left side of the field just behind the midfield line. Damery beat her mark up the left side of the field, turned into the 18 and put a shot into the back of the net to make it 3-0.

With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Mitchell erased the home team's opportunity for a clean sheet on a Corrigan shot that sailed over the head of keeper Paige Albertson. Albertson finished with four saves in the contest while Slover made seven.

Mitchell (2-3-0 overall) will next open conference play at New England College on Saturday, September 21 at 3 p.m.
