BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The Mitchell College women's soccer team made the trip to Brooklyn, NY, on Saturday afternoon and came away with their first victory of the season, a 3-0 shutout of the Bulldogs.
The win capped a five-game road trip which began the Mariners season, and gives them momentum heading into their home opener. Madison Nicynski, Mariah Travisano, and Elon Johnson all netted goals for Mitchell, who have now allowed just one goal in the past three games.
It did not take long for Mitchell to go ahead, as Nicynski scored unassisted in the eighth minute of the game, also the first goal for the Mariners this season. The Bulldogs buckled down, however, and a defensive battle ensued for the remainder of the first half, with both teams getting off just four total shots.
Mitchell made some key adjustments at halftime and wore down the Brooklyn squad, upping their shot total to nine in the second half.
Travisano finally broke the game open, scoring her first goal of the season in the 72nd minute. Two minutes later, Elon Johnson got in on the action, sailing one past the Brooklyn goalkeeper. All the while, the Mitchell defense remained stout, allowing just four shots on goal all afternoon. Those shots were saved by Gemma Landry and Angelina Munoz, who split goalie duties.
Mitchell won the corner kick battle, with eight to Brooklyn's six.
With a win in their back pocket, Mitchell will now prepare for their home opener on Wednesday, September 21st, in New London against Northern Vermont-Lyndon. That game will be the first of four consecutive home games for the Mariners, who are now sport a 1-3-1 record.
