NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 final to New England College on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Kristen Walker scored both goals for the Pilgrims (2-3-1 overall), who dominated possession time and held a 24-0 advantage in shots. Freshman Shirley Palmer made her second straight start in goal for the Mariners (0-3-0 overall) and finished with five saves.
NEC took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Amber Rose delivered a pass to Walker at the top of the 18-yard box. Walker made a quick turn and sprinted past a defender before delivering a shot into the left side of the goal for her first tally of the season. The Pilgrims had several other scoring chances in the stanza but could not connect, settling for the one-goal lead at the halftime intermission.
Walker added her second goal in the 58th minute thanks to a hustle play by teammate Alyssa Krause. Krause sprinted down the sideline to stop a long ball from rolling over the end line, and after keeping it in she took a few touches before sending a cross to Walker in front of the goal. Walker buried the cross for her second score of the contest and gave the Pilgrims an insurance goal for the final 30 minutes.
Tricia Sardagnola got the start in goal for NEC and picked up her first solo shutout of the season.
Mitchell will next host Rhode Island College on Saturday, September 14 at noon.
