Becker Trumps Women's Soccer in NECC Opener
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Alison Mosdale finished with three goals and two assists to lead Becker College to an 8-1 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer action at Alumni Field.
Five Becker players recorded goals on the day as the Hawks won their NECC opener and improved to 7-1-0 overall. Ciara McKissick netted a pair of goals and added an assist while Helena Ortiz, Lindsey Keith and Maria Colon each contributed markers. Becker held a 25-8 advantage in shots in the contest.
The visitors got out to a quick lead with a pair of goals in the opening 11:06. Mosdale started her day with a goal in the ninth minute, finishing off a cross from Keith inside the box. Less than three minutes later, a throw in by Mosdale found Ortiz at the far post for a header and a 2-0 lead.
Becker added to the margin in the 21st minute as Erika Galdamez served up a corner kick for McKissick, who headed it home for her first goal of the contest. McKissick then returned the favor in the 30th minute by servicing a ball over the back line that Mosdale tracked down and finished to make it 4-0.
Keith's goal in the 34th minute came on an unassisted effort, as she chipped a ball over the Mitchell goalkeeper from 20 yards out. Becker's final goal of the half came in the 41st minute as another throw in by Mosdale was played on by Victoria Belcher and finished by McKissick for her sixth goal of the season.
Mitchell's lone goal of the day came moments later as Christina Jando cleaned up a loose ball in front of the Becker net for her team-leading fifth score of the season. However, the Mariners trailed 6-1 at the break after being outshot 15-5 in the stanza.
Becker tacked on a pair of insurance goals in the second half. Colon scored her fifth goal of the season in the 48th minute off a feed from Ortiz while Mosdale completed her hat trick in the 69th minute. Mosdale now leads the Hawks in scoring with eight goals and four assists for 20 points.
Mitchell keeper Katie McBride finished with seven saves while Becker's Jordyn Martel turned away three shots.
Mitchell (1-3-2 overall, 0-1-0 NECC) will next play at Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m. Becker returns to action at home against Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
