QUINCY, Mass. -- The Mitchell College women's soccer team fought hard but dropped a 4-2 decision at Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference showdown at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
J'Naya Kelly and Lindsey Fairbank each found the back of the net for the Mariners, who dropped to 3-6-0 overall (0-2-0 NECC). Lindsey Robinson finished with three saves in goal.
The Mariners put up the first goal in the 11th minute to take an early lead. After a free kick was played into the box, Natalie Delaluz gained control and slipped a pass to Kelly who was 10 yards out from the left post. She drilled a left-footed shot into the back of the net for her fourth marker of the season.
The lead held up until the 33rd minute when ENC's Diamond Best scored to even the match. The teams were still locked at 1-1 when the halftime whistle blew.
The Lions needed just 1:39 in the second half to pull in front, as Victoria Hern netted the first of two goals on the day. However, Mitchell was quick to respond, as less than a minute later Delaluz drew a foul just over 30 yards out from the goal. Fairbank lined up to take the kick and perfectly clipped the ball over the outstretched arms of the ENC keeper. The goal, which tied the game at 2-2, was her team-leading fifth of the season.
Hern put the Lions up for good with another tally in the 59th minute, and Maider Ruiz de Erenc added an insurance marker in the 75th.
Mitchell will next host Old Westbury on Wednesday, October 9 at 3:30 p.m.
