BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team dropped their season finale on Wednesday night, falling 3-1 to Simmons University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match at Daly Field.
The Sharks wasted no time in this one, as Peyton Renzi got Simmons on the board early with a header into the bottom right corner of the net. Three minutes later, Lauren Krupnikoff scored the second goal for Simmons, propelling the home team to a 2-0 advantage early on. The Mariners answered with a goal by junior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) at the 34:51 mark, but the Sharks tacked on an insurance goal early in the second half when Cerys Balmer found the back of the net off a corner kick.
Roman finished with a team-leading two shots on goal, while freshman Ava Iwasko (Sterling Heights, Mich.) notched one shot on goal. Simmons outshot Mitchell 14-3 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Freshman Ronnie Keays (Salem, N.H.) started in goal and made three saves over the opening 81 minutes. Senior Hannah Penn (New Fairfield, Conn.) played the final nine minutes without recording a save. Mikaela marie Javar made one save in the win for Simmons.
The Mariners finish their season with an overall record of 0-14-1. The Sharks end their season with a record of 4-8-4, including a 4-7-4 mark in conference play.
