NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision to SUNY Old Westbury on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Panthers (7-6-0 overall) scored the first four goals of the contest, three of which came off the foot of Bernadelle Dorvil. Britney Graham also finished with a goal while Tania Bonilla supplied a pair of assists.
Old Westbury attacked Mitchell through the middle of the field the entire day, sending vertical passes to its speedy forwards for one-on-one chances. The Panthers capitalized twice in a 49-second stretch as Bonilla sprung Graham in the 34th minute and Dorvil in the 35th. Dorvil later added her second marker with under a minute remaining in the half, chasing down a loose ball and cutting back against a defender before bending a shot inside the far post.
Leading 3-0 at the break, the Panthers added to the margin in the 63rd minute as Dorvil completed her first career hat trick on a pass from Cara Normile. The goal raised her season total to eight, just one shy of the team lead.
The Mariners scored both goals in the final eight minutes of the contest. After rocketing a shot off the crossbar earlier in the match, Fairbank finally cashed in on an individual effort in the 83rd minute to put Mitchell on the scoreboard. The second tally came as the result of a free kick from 30 yards out that was played into the box by Nicynski and finished by Fairbank in the 87th minute.
The Panthers held a 25-21 edge in total shots. Yakeline Umanzor and Moira Nolan split time in goal for Old Westbury and combined for eight saves. Mitchell keeper Lindsey Robinson finished with six stops.
Mitchell (3-7-0 overall) will next host Medgar Evers College on Saturday, October 12 at 12:30 p.m. Old Westbury returns to action at the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday at 1 p.m.
