WSoccer Falls 3-0 at Regis
WESTON, Mass. – Three different players found the back of the net en route to a 3-0 shutout victory for the Regis College women's soccer team over New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) foe Mitchell College on Saturday.
The Pride grabbed their first win in league play and improved to 4-5-2 overall, 1-1-1 NECC. The Mariners fell to 1-7-0 on the season, 1-2-0 NECC with the loss.
The Pride had a wealth of opportunities to open the game. They were awarded six corner kicks within the first 18 minutes of play but were not able to capitalize. Regis finally got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute of play after a great buildup.
Shannon Simonelli dribbled down the middle of the field and dished a through-ball to forward Adena Joseph. Joseph moved down the right wing, faked out a Mariner player with a cut back move, and sent the ball into the box. The ball hit off a Mitchell defender and deflected off goalkeeper Kaylee Woodford before rolling to Joana Rosa, who tapped the ball into a wide open net for her first career goal and the 1-0 lead.
Mitchell finished with two shots in the first half, which proved to be its only shots of the game. Sophomores Alexander Mahar and Katie McBride each tallied a shot for the Mariners, but neither attempt was on target.
Coming out of the break, Regis did not waste any time in building its lead. Less than a minute into the half, Jasmin Vivar connected with Sam Salamone on a corner kick. Salamone headed Vivar's ball into the back of the net to put the Pride up 2-0.
Joseph helped put the game away in the 77th minute of play. After Simonelli was taken down in the box by a Mitchell defender, Regis was awarded a penalty shot. Joseph calmly stepped up to take the shot and struck it high-middle to make the game 3-0.
The Regis backline, led by Jackie Rocheville and Nora Bosteels, were solid all game long and prevented the visitors from taking a single shot in the entire second half.
Woodford finished the game with nine saves to lead Mitchell.
The Mariners will next travel to Elms College on Monday, October 7 for a 7 p.m. league game.
