NEW LONDON, Conn. – Anna Maria College scored goals in each half to come away with a 2-0 victory over Mitchell College on Monday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Alumni Field.
Shannon Disco and Arianna Masley each netted goals for the AMCATS, who improved to 5-4-0 overall on the season. Kate Kneeland recorded eight saves in goal to earn her third shutout of the season.
Anna Maria had the better of possession in the opening half and cashed in at the 14:13 mark when Savanah Catucci slipped a pass to Disco for a head-on shot at the Mitchell goal. Disco blasted a shot that hit off the crossbar and deflected into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Trailing by a goal at the break, the Mariners came out in the second half and were the aggressors for the majority of the stanza. Mitchell outshot Anna Maria 13-6 in the period but couldn't get anything past Kneeland, who stopped all five shots on goal in the final 45 minutes.
The AMCATS got some breathing room in the 57th minute when Masley made it 2-0 with her team-leading fourth tally of the season. Emily Gorrivan set up the goal with a cross from the right side to the far post, and Masley beat the keeper to the ball and deposited the easy score.
Mitchell's best chance at a goal came in the 68th minute when, following a corner kick, the ball found the foot of Samantha Cilenti from 25 yards out. She rocketed a shot that looked destined to slip under the crossbar, but Kneeland made a leaping save and punched the ball over the top of the cage.
The Mariners held a 19-14 advantage in shots for the contest. Mitchell keeper Katie McBride finished with five saves.
Mitchell (0-6-0 overall) will next host Daniel Webster College on Saturday, September 27 at noon. Anna Maria returns to action at home against Johnson & Wales University on Saturday at 6 p.m.
