NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team posted its first New England Collegiate Conference victory of the season by a 4-1 final over Newbury College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Seniors Taylor Silva and Alexandra Mahar and sophomore Vannessa Ortiz all found the back of the net for the Mariners on the day, and freshman Drew Johndrow made eight saves to pick up her first collegiate win in goal. Mitchell improved to 2-6-3 overall (1-3-1 NECC) while Newbury dropped to 3-9-0 overall (1-4-0 NECC).
The Mariners struck for the first goal in the 20th minute after a corner kick was sent into the box and came off a defender to the foot of Silva, who slipped a shot inside the right post for her second goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Mitchell went ahead 2-0 when a Newbury defender tried for a clear but put the ball in her own net.
Leading 2-0 at the half, the Mariners added to the margin two minutes into the second stanza as freshman Jacquelyn White played a through ball up the middle of the field to Ortiz, who finished past the Newbury keeper for her fourth goal of the year. Mahar added the final touch in the 54th minute when she finished off a nice feed from Taylor Saja into the right corner of the goal from 15 yards out.
Newbury got on the scoreboard in the 85th minute on an unassisted tally by Shannon Walsh. The goal was her team-leading sixth of the season.
Goalkeeper Elizabeth Fox faced 22 shots in the contest and finished with 11 saves for the Nighthawks.
Mitchell will next play at Lesley University on Wednesday, October 21 at 8 p.m. Newbury returns to action at home against Daniel Webster College on Tuesday, October 20 at 7 p.m.
