Southern Vermont Hands Women's Soccer a 3-0 Defeat
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Southern Vermont College came away with a 3-0 victory over Mitchell College in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer play on a rainy Monday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Mountaineers (8-4-0 overall, 3-1-0 NECC) scored all three goals in the first half—including two from Jayne Wierzbicki—to extend their winning streak to six games. Taylor Mallett also contributed a goal while goalkeeper Melissa Mascari turned away three shots to record the clean sheet.
Mitchell keeper Jordan Lohneiss had a busy day, finishing with 15 saves against 26 total shots. She made several stellar saves, including a point-blank stop late in the contest to keep the deficit at three.
Wierzbicki put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard in the 19th minute, cleaning up a loose ball in the box that had deflected off a defender's foot following a throw in. Lohneiss got a piece of the shot but couldn't keep it from trickling over the goal line for the 1-0 SVC lead.
Just over nine minutes later, Wierzbicki picked up her second tally off a nice feed from Nicole Shapiro, who slotted a pass to the right side of the box. Wierzbicki took the pass in stride and calmly deposited her team-leading ninth goal of the season. It also marked her third multi-goal game of the year, all of which have come in the last five games.
Mallett made it 3-0 in the 39th minute on a header from in front of the goal. Ashley Blom set up the score with a service ball into a fray at the top of the six-yard box, and Mallett fought through the crowd to collect her second goal of the season.
Mitchell (1-8-0 overall, 0-4-0 NECC) will next host Newbury College on Saturday, October 14 at noon. Southern Vermont returns to action at home against Elms College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
