Mitchell Women Too Much for Newbury
NEW LONDON, CONN. - Freshmen Bianca Young (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Destiney Harris (Bristol, Conn.) led the Mariners to a lop-sided, 85-59 victory over visiting Newbury College at the Yarnall Athletic Center on Thursday evening. Young finished with 23 points on 10-for-13 shooting, and she also grabbed nine rebounds and three steals. Harris provided a strong post presence and scored 22 points and hauled down nine boards in the win.
The Mariners were able to steadily build a lead in the first half as they converted 19 points off of 16 Newbury turnovers. Mitchell also out-scored the visitors in the paint 20-to-6 before the intermission. Junior guard Jen Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.) dished out eight assists in the first half, and she would finish with a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists.
The second half was much of the same with Mitchell shooting 45% from the field and forcing their opponent into 12 second half turnovers. The Mariners also dominated the glass, as they out-rebounded Newbury by a 40-to-25 margin.
Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) led the Nighthawks with 16 points, while teammate Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass.) chipped in with 13.
Tania Gee (West Haven, Conn.) got into the double digit scoring column with 11 points, and Allison Peck (Colchester, Conn.) netted eight.
Mitchell is now 11-9 overall and 10-2 in NECC play, while the loss drops Newbury to 4-17 and 4-8. Mitchell returns to action on Saturday, February 14th when they host Becker College at 1:00 pm.
