Wiley Named to NEWBA All-Region Team
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) announced its all-region teams and major award winners for the 2022-2023 season earlier this week, and Mitchell College senior forward Amina Wiley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was among those recognized.
Wiley was one of 20 players who received all-region honors, landing on the fourth team as the only representative of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC). This group of athletes were nominated and voted on by coaches from around the region for their impact on the hardwood during the regular season.
It marks the second consecutive season that Wiley has earned NEWBA all-region honors, as last winter she became the first Mitchell player to ever recieve the recognition. She was recently named to the the All-NECC first team for the fourth time in her career. She was also recently tabbed as one of six players on the NECC All-Tournament team after helping guide the Mariners to their second straight conference title.
The fifth year senior from New Rochelle, N.Y., put together another standout season for the Mitchell College women's basketball team. Wiley averaged 15 points, 10.8 rebounds, and just under one block per game during the regular season, as the Mariners went undefeated in conference play. The 15 points per game were second in the conference, while her 10.8 rebounds were a conference best, and she was also second in the NECC with a 58.4% field goal percentage. During conference play, her numbers remained strong, averaging 16.5 points and 10.2 rebounds across six games, in which the Mariners outscored opponents 531-351. She finished the regular season with eight double-doubles, scored in double figures 16 times, grabbed double digit rebounds in 11 games, and became the first player in Mitchell women's program history to reach 1,000 rebounds. Wiley then capped off her collegiate career by scoring 25 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in Mitchell's opening round game of the NCAA Division III Tournament against DeSales University.
In the game against DeSales, Wiley reached 1,783 career points, surpassing Eric Murray as the all time leading scorer (men's or women's basketball) in the Mitchell's Division III history.
