Johnson, Perez Grab NECC Weekly Honors
MANSFIELD, Mass. – A pair of Mitchell College women's soccer players were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday morning.
Sophomore Elon Johnson was named NECC Player of the Week while freshman Ileana Perez was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. The duo led the Mariners to a 2-0 week that included wins over Fisher College and SUNY Old Westbury.
Johnson and Perez earned league honors for the first time in their careers. Perez is the second Mitchell newcomer to garner rookie of the week status, joining classmate Gemma Landry (Sept. 7).
Johnson scored a team-high seven goals and 15 points over the two games, including the first goal of her collegiate career. The forward kicked off the week with five goals in an overtime victory over Fisher, breaking the school's single-game scoring record in the process. She then added two more tallies and an assist in a 10-2 rout at Old Westbury.
Perez, a midfielder, recorded four goals and two assists last week. Her first career goal was the overtime winner against Fisher, a score that notched Mitchell's first win of the season. She followed that up with a hat trick and two assists against Old Westbury, including the game-winning goal.
Mitchell (2-2-0 overall) will next host Dean College on Tuesday, September 14 at 4 p.m.
