Women’s Soccer Edged by NEC to Conclude Season

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team was defeated 3-2 by New England College on Tuesday afternoon in GNAC action, bringing the Mariners season to an end.
Mitchell freshman Morgan Fontaine netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season, while sophomore Cassandra Roman also scored, giving her four goals this fall, good for second on the team. Freshman Haley Jeske (Maricopa Ariz.) and junior Tessa Seesock (Jacksonville, Fla.) also each collected their lone assists of the season for Mitchell in the loss.
After the Pilgrims opened the scoring in the first minute of play on a goal by Shelby McBain, the Mariners converted the equalizer when Haley Jeske pushed a perfect through ball to Cassandra Roman with just under 20 minutes remaining in the opening half. The sophomore took possession in stride and beat the NEC goalie in a one-on-one scoring opportunity for her fourth goal in the last five games. Julia Lanoie would score in the 34th minute to put the Pilgrims back on top, and that is where the score remained until six minutes into the second half when the Mitchell deficict turned to two goals after Shelby McBain fired the ball home into the back of the net.
The Mariners made it a one goal game in the 63th minute when Tessa Seesock made a pass to the freshman Morgan Fontaine, who in turn delivered a perfect arching shot, bending the ball past the NEC keeper into the top left corner of the goal. That would be as close as Mitchell would get however, as the Pilgrims withstood a barrage of 27 shots by the Mariners, 18 of those on net. Fontaine paced the offensive attack with 10 shots on goal, while Haley Jeske added three of her own.
Mitchell goalkeeper Gemma Landry turned away five shots and finished the regular season tops in the conference with 150 saves, 19 more than the second place finisher. NEC's Stephanie Bronowicki earned the win and was credited with 15 saves.
The Mariners conclude their first season in the GNAC with an overall record of 4-12-1 (2-12-1 GNAC). The Pilgrims finish the regular season with a 5-11-1 record (5-10 GNAC).
