NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team fell behind early and was unable to catch up on Wednesday afternoon, losing 3-0 to Albertus Magnus College in a GNAC matchup at Alumni Field. The Falcons improved their conference record to 1-3-1 with the win, while the Mariners dropped to 0-4-1 in GNAC play.
After a scoreless first 10 minutes, the Mariners aided the Falcons by putting one in their own goal during the 11th minute. Coming off an Albertus free kick, Victoria Jainchill gained possession and got off a shot which ricocheted off the glove of Mitchell goalkeeper Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME), and rebounded in front of the net, where a pair of Mitchell defenders accidentally knocked the ball into the home goal. It would remain a one score game until the 61st minute when Jainchill received a pass, beat her defender into the penalty box, and then cut past another defender, before firing a shot over Landry and into the top of the net. The Falcons tallied the final goal of the game with just over 15 minutes remaining, a Tyana Jack score off an assist by Ejalam Bravo.
The Mariners managed 15 shots on the day, yet only four were on goal. Senior Elon Johnson (Freeport, BHS) logged two of the four shots on goal, including one in the 79th minute that was saved by Albertus keeper Amy Stevens. As a team, the Falcons held a slight edge over Mitchell in shot attempts, 19-15, with a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal, while the two squads were tied with two corner kick opportunities apiece.
Gemma Landry recorded 10 saves against 13 shots for the Mariers, as the junior's record moved to 2-4-1 on the year. Amy Stevens tallied four saves for the Falcons.
Mitchell (2-4-1, 0-4-1 GNAC) will look for their first conference victory as a member of the GNAC when they play at Regis College on Saturday, September 23rd, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 pm. Albertus Magnus (2-3-2, 1-3-1 GNAC) return to action on Saturday, September 23rd, when they host Rivier University in a GNAC tilt.
