NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team came out on the wrong end of a 2-0 decision during a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match against Rivier University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Graduate student Darcy Wright and freshman Julia Acampora each tallied goals for the Raiders, while fellow freshman Nadia Laxa assisted on both goals. Rivier broke open a scoreless tie early in the 22nd minute when Wright knocked home a header off a corner kick, and the Raiders then added to their lead just over 10 minutes into the second half when Acampora beat the Mitchell goalie at the top of the box, earning a clean shot on net.
Senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) logged all 90 minutes in goal for Mitchell and turned away 15 shots. This marks the third time in as many games to begin the season in which Landry has made 15 or more saves. Junior Bri Nugent recorded two saves for the Raiders to earn the win.
Rivier edged Mitchell in total shots (27-3) and corner kicks (3-2). Senior Francesca Zamarripa (Litia, Fla.) paced the Mariners with two of their three shots on the day.
The Mariners (0-3, 0-3 GNAC) will look for their first GNAC win of the season when they host Elms College on Tuesday, September 17, at 3:00 pm. Rivier (2-2-2, 2-0-1 GNAC) will look to make it three wins in a row when they host Nichols College on Wednesday, September 18.
