NEW LONDON, Conn. – Despite getting off a season-high 10 shots, including four on goal, the Mitchell College women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Elms College on Tuesday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tilt at Alumni Field.
The Blazers have now won four consecutive games after beginning the season 0-3, receiving goals Tuesday by juniors Jordan Lee and Jamie McDonough to move to 4-1 in conference play. Sophomore Emily Basua assisted on the second goal of the game, as Elms outshot Mitchell 17-10 and helf a 3-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
The two squads engaged in a fierce defensive battle early, before Lee broke open a scoreless tie with her first goal of the fall in the 30th minute. It remained a one-goal deficit for the Mariners until four minutes into the second half when Basua set up McDonough, capping the scoring on the afternoon.
Senior Francesca Zamarripa (Lithia, Fla.) had an opportunity to give the Mariners a lead on a breakaway in the 29th minute, but her show was saved by Elms goalkeeper Hailey Magierowski. Juniors Lauren Corder (Selden, N.Y.) and Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) each also recorded a shot on goal, as did freshman Ava Iwasko (Sterling Heights, Mich.).
Magierowski turned away four shots in the win for the Blazers. Mitchell senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) faced 11 shots and tallied nine saves.
The Mariners (0-4, 0-4 GNAC) travel to face Saint Joseph's College (ME) in a GNAC match on Saturday, September 21, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 pm. The Blazers (4-3, 4-1 GNAC) will go for their fifth win in a row when they play Lesley University in a non-league game on Sunday, September 22.
