NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team stormed back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game late in the second half on Saturday afternoon, but New England College secured a late goal to hold on for a 3-2 victory in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game at Alumni Field.
With both teams looking for their first victory of the season, the Pilgrims leapt out to a 2-0 lead within the first 25 minutes of the game on a pair of goals by Michelina Follis. The score held through halftime, before junior Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) put the Mariners on the board by firing home a crossing shot that soared from deep outside the box on the right into the back left corner of the net, good for her first goal of the season.
The Mariners eventually knotted the score midway through the 78th minute when junior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) set up freshman Ava Iwasko (Sterling Heights, Mich.) for her first collegiate goal, bringing the contest to a dead even tie at 2-2. The game winning goal by NEC came at the 84:03 mark by Mia Loewenberg, which came off an assist by Julianna Barrett.
Iwasko paced Mitchell with four shots, while Roman and freshman Ella Caplet (Bozrah, Conn.) finished with two shots each.
The Mariners got off a season-high 13 shots and narrowly trailed the Pilgrims 8-6 in shots on goal. NEC also held a 6-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) recorded five saves for Mitchell in the loss, while Hollie Bomba earned the win, turning away four shots along the way.
The Mariners (0-10, 0-10 GNAC) return to action on Wednesday, October 16, at home when they welcome Anna Maria College to town for a GNAC clash. The game will also serve as senior day. The Pilgrims (1-11-1, 1-8-1 GNAC) play at Saint Joseph's College (ME) on Wednesday, October 16.
