WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Gabby Gulino scored three goals for the University of Saint Joseph women's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon, helping power the Blue Jays past Mitchell College 4-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the USJ Soccer Field.
Gulino fired her first goal home in the 8th minute of play off an assist by Jelly Frigo, before making it a 1-0 game six minutes later, also off a Frigo assist. The Blue Jays jumped up by three goals 38 minutes into the match when Ava Kriak scored, before Gulino completed the hat trick just under nine minutes into the second half. USJ outshot the Mariners 19-2, including a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Blue Jays were also awarded six corner kick opportunities, while the Mariners had none. Freshman Ava Iwasko (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and junior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) registered shots for Mitchell in the loss.
Senior Hannah Penn (New Fairfield, Conn.) earned the starting nod in goal for the Mariners and surrendered three goals across the opening 45 minutes. Freshman Ronnie Keays (Salem, N.H.) came on for the second half in her first action of the season and faced seven shots, turning away six of them. USJ's Madison Corcoran recorded one save in the win.
The Mariners (0-12-1, 0-12-1 GNAC) return to action on Saturday, October 26, when they host Lasell University in a conference match at 1:30 pm. The Blue Jays (6-9-2, 6-5-2 GNAC) host Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday, October 26.
