Roman’s Career Day Powers Women’s Soccer to Season Opening Win
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team opened its 2025 campaign in dominant fashion on Sunday afternoon, rolling past Yeshiva University 9-1 in a non-conference clash at Alumni Field.
Senior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) led the way with five goals, setting a new career high while tying the program record for most goals in a single game during the Division III era. Fellow senior Taylor Bialowas (Griswold, Conn.) and sophomore Ava Iwasko (Sterling Heights, Mich.) each added two goals, as the Mariners' nine-goal output marked the second-highest single-game total in the Division III era.
The Mariners wasted little time setting the tone, with Roman finding the back of the net just five minutes into play. She struck again less than four minutes later, sparking a first-half surge that quickly put the match in Mitchell's control.
By the midway point of the opening period, Mitchell had already built a commanding advantage. Bialowas tallied her first goal of the day at the 16:48 mark, followed just over a minute later by Roman's third. Iwasko then capped the first-half scoring flurry with her first career tally in the 19th minute, sending Mitchell into halftime ahead 5-0.
The second half brought more of the same. Bialowas struck again early in the frame, before Roman continued her standout afternoon with two more goals. Iwasko added her second in the 58th minute to extend the lead.
Yeshiva broke through in the 74th minute, when Naomi Sigman converted an unassisted effort to spoil the shutout bid. Roman, however, had the final word, scoring her fifth of the day in the 83rd minute to seal the 9-1 final.
Mitchell dominated statistically, outshooting Yeshiva 28-6 and holding a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.
In net, sophomore Ronnie Keays (Salem, N.H.) started and played the first half, turning away three shots to earn the win. Freshman Olivia Moses (Bloomfield, Conn.) came on for the second half and surrendered one goal. For Yeshiva, goalkeeper Sophia Haironson faced 15 shots on goal and finished with six saves.
The Mariners (1-0, 0-0 GNAC) return to action on Wednesday, September 10, when they host Albertus Magnus College in their Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener. Yeshiva (0-1, 0-0 Skyline) visits Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday, September 2.
