NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Avary Hall scored a team-high two goals and fellow sophomore Delaney Scanlon dished out three assists, helping to power the Regis College women's soccer team past Mitchell College 5-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
After the two squads engaged in a strong defensive battle over the opening portion of the first half, the Pride broke through on a goal by freshman Sienna Santiago in the 34th minute, which proved to be all the offense Regis would need on the afternoon. Hall added her fifth goal of the fall three minutes later, before graduate student Lindsay Burnham made it a three goal deficit for the Mariners with another goal less than a minute later.
Another ball found the back of the Mitchell net in the opening minutes of the second half, before Hall capped the scoring with her sixth goal of the season at the 66:40 mark.
Senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME), the reigning GNAC Goalkeeper of the Year, faced 22 shots on goal and turned away 17 of them in her season debut. The Mariners struggled to gain footing against a strong Pride defense and were outshot 33-2, while Regis recorded 21 shots on net.
Senior Francesca Zamarripa (Lithia, Fla.) was responsible for both shots on the day for Mitchell.
The Mariners (0-1, 0-1 GNAC) will look to rebound when they continue conference play on Wednesday, September 11, with a 6:00 pm tilt at Albertus Magnus. The Pride (2-2, 1-0 GNAC) will look to make it two wins in a row when they host Emmanuel in a conference showdown on Wednesday, September 11, at 7:00 pm.
