Dean Defeats Women’s Soccer
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team fell by a final of 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon to Dean College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match at Alumni Field.
Senior Lisette Ayala scored a pair of goals to power the Bulldogs to their first conference victory of the season, while fellow senior Jazlyn Estrella tallied a goal as well. Freshman Alyssa Caney and sophomore Kacie Consolini each collected assists for Dean in the win.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Caney set up Ayala for her third goal of the fall. The Mariners had a strong opportunity 15:15 into the game when junior Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) broke free and had a one on one opportunity with the Dean goalkeeper, but riffled her shot off the top crossbar.
The Mariners strong defense held tight and kept the score at 1-0 through halftime, before Ayala made it a two-goal deficit on a feed from Consolini in the 57th minute. Jazlyn Estrella capped the scoring for the Bulldogs in final minute of play with her second goal of the year.
It was another strong showing in goal for Mitchell senior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME), the reigning GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week, who turned away 14 shots. That marks the fifth time in six games this season in which Landry has registered double-digit saves.
Senior goalkeeper Haley Gaunt produced a clean sheet for Dean without having to record a save.
The Bulldogs held a 27-4 advantage in shots, with a 7-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Aside from Roman, freshman Ella Caplet (Bozrah, Conn.), and seniors Tessa Seesock (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Francesca Zamarripa (Lithia, Fla.) got off shots for Mitchell.
The Mariners (0-6, 0-6 GNAC) will continue conference play on Saturday, September 28, when they host Johnson & Wales University at 11:00 am. The Bulldogs (2-5-1, 1-4-1 GNAC) play next on Saturday, September 28, at Regis College.
