STANDISH, ME – The Mitchell College men's soccer team fell by a final of 2-0 against Saint Joseph's College (Me) on Saturday afternoon at a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tilt at the SJC Athletics Complex.
Despite a scoreless opening half, the Monks controlled the pace of play early on, outshooting the Mariners 13-1 over the first 45 minutes, while holding a 3-0 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
The Monks eventually broke the scoreless tie in the 59th minute when Rion Dos Santos took a corner kick, and after the ball was booted back to him, Don Santos popped the ball back into box where it landed at the foot of Hayes Sweeney, who fired it into the back of the net. A free kick with 14 minutes remaining propelled the Monks to their second goal of the game, as Dos Santos booted the free kick from outside the box on the left side and sailed it untouched into the back right corner of the goal.
Sophomore Nathan Da Cruz (Seymour, Conn.) got off a team-high two shots on goal for the Mariners, while senior captain Dylan Lucey (Lebanon, Conn.) also registered a shot on net.
Mitchell sophomore Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) turned away a season-high 11 shots. Liam Foley of the Monks earned the win and made three saves.
The Mariners (1-9-1, 1-7 GNAC) return to play with a non-conference game against Fitchburg State on Tuesday, October 8, with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 pm. The Monks (4-6-1, 3-4 GNAC) travel to New England College for their next game on Wednesday, October 9.
