Second Half PKs Push Mitchell Over Lehman
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer
team got a pair of second half penalty kicks to pull out a 4-2
victory over Lehman College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni
Field.
Senior co-captain Jaime Serrano converted on penalty kicks in the
58th and 80th minutes to give the Mariners (2-1-0 overall) control.
Serrano finished with three goals on the day for his first career
hat trick.
Those who were late to the start of the game missed an influx of
scoring in the opening 10 minutes. Lehman put the first score up on
the board just 3:27 into the contest when Assami Valian finished
off a feed from Essenam Agouze. Minutes later, the Mariners
responded with an unassisted tally by Serrano at the 6:46 mark to
knot the game at 1-1. Sophomore Matt Grandy then put Mitchell on
top with his first career goal in the 10th minute off an assist by
junior James Gleason.
The Lightning tied the game at 2-2 in the 24th minute when Agouze
found Geovanny Arredondo for his first goal of the season. Neither
squad would break the deadlock before the halftime
intermission.
Serrano's two goals in the second half gave him three for the
day and a team-leading four on the season. Junior goalkeeper Kevin Woodford and the Mitchell defense made the margin stand. Woodford
finished with four saves against eight shots while Lehman's
Marcos Coto-Batres made seven against 18 shots.
Mitchell returns to action at home against Coast Guard on
Wednesday, September 15 at 4:30 p.m.
