NEWTON, Mass.- The Mitchell College men's soccer team opened up Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 3-2 loss to Lasell University on Tuesday afternoon at Taylor Field.
Graduate student Mpumelelo Maphumulo tallied a hat trick for the Lasers, scoring twice in the second half, as Lasell edged out Mitchell for their first win of the season.
The Mariners broke a scoreless tie in the 30th minute of play on the first collegiate goal from freshman Gabe Ansani (Trumbull, Conn.). Maphumulo answered to knot the score two minute later, sending the match to the intermission at 1-1. Lasell notched two quick goals to begin the second frame, both by Mpumelelo Maphumulo, with assists from Liam Thompson and Michael Calabrese.
Mitchell junior Flavio Alvardo (New London, Conn.) fired home his second goal of the fall in the 79th minute, but the Mariners were unable to get any closer. Alvarado paced Mitchell with four shots, two on goal.
Senior Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.) got the start in goal and made four saves. Sophomore Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) played the second half and turned away three shots.
Senior goalkeeper Antonio Centracchio collected his first win in the cage, recording a pair of saves despite allowing two goals.
The Mariners (0-2-1, 0-1 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they face New England College at home on Saturday, September 14, at 3:00 pm. The Lasers (1-2, 1-0 GNAC) travel for a conferene tilt at Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday, September 14.
