Men's Tennis Stumbles at Regis
WESTON, Mass. – Backed by Michael Beluch and Sophorn Nop, who each recorded wins in both singles and doubles play, the Regis College men's tennis team defeated visiting Mitchell College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Pride captured their third straight victory and improved to 3-8 overall (3-0 NECC). The Mariners, who fell to 2-2 overall (1-1 NECC), were led by Zachary Simmons, Graham Cavanaugh and Chris McKeon, who each registered wins in singles play.
The Pride were able to jump out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. Beluch and Jeff Parrish defeated Rocco Devona and Cavanaugh in No. 1 doubles, 8-6. In No. 2 doubles, the duo of Andy White and Austin Nace was able to get past Simmons and Randy Coons, 8-4, while Nop and Matt Smolko defeated Timothy Atkinson and McKeon, 8-3, in No. 3 doubles.
Beluch got things started for the Pride in No. 1 singles play. The sophomore beat Devona by virtue of set scores of 6-2 and 6-1. The Mariners were finally able to get on the board as Simmons and Cavanaugh defeated Parrish and White in No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
Nop and Mouhamed Diallo were able to seal the match for Regis after winning their respective singles matches. Nop defeated Coons (6-2, 6-0) in No. 4 singles and Diallo beat Atkinson (6-3, 6-1) in No. 5 singles to lock up the victory for the Pride, despite McKeon's win over Biruk Legesse in No. 6 singles (6-1, 3-6, 10-8).
Mitchell returns to action at home against Lesley Univesity on Thursday, April 4 at 3:00 p.m.
