Men's Tennis Wins at Lesley
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team swept doubles and dropped just one singles match en route to an 8-1 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) victory on Friday night at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols.
With the win, the Mariners improved to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the NECC. The Lynx fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Mitchell senior Rocco Devona and freshman Graham Cavanaugh teamed up to take No. 1 doubles over Lesley seniors Nick Mattox and Alex Zhitnik, 8-4. Juniors Zachary Simmons and Randy Coons took No. 2 doubles over Lesley juniors Mike Kaufman and Thomas Tedesco, 8-1, while the team of Timothy Atkinson and Chris McKeon made it a sweep in doubles when they took the No. 3 slot, 8-4, over Lynx senior Jimmy Paulsen and sophomore Jordan Santos.
Devona and Simmons both rolled to 6-0, 6-0 victories to open up singles play at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. Cavanaugh kept up the trend by taking No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Tedesco while Atkinson defeated sophomore Roman Pham in No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-2.
McKeon rounded out the victory for Mitchell with a 6-4, 6-2 win in No. 6 singles over Paulsen.
Kaufman grabbed the only win for the Lynx as he took No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Coons.
The Mariners will hit the court again when they travel to Regis College on Tuesday, April 2 for a 4:30 p.m. start.
