Men's Tennis Tops Albertus Magnus
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team defeated Albertus Magnus College by a 5-1 final on Monday afternoon in non-conference action at the Mack Tennis Courts.
Mitchell had already secured the match before rain prevented the final three singles contests from being completed. The Mariners won all three doubles points and took two of the three singles matches that were finished to pick up the victory.
Sophomore Graham Cavanaugh led the Mariners to victory at both the No. 1 singles and doubles spots. He bested Pete Zacharias in three sets by scores of 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 and teamed with freshman Adam Diaz to win 8-6 over Zacharias and Mathew Mezzei. Diaz also picked up a win at No. 2 singles by a 6-4, 6-2 final over Mezzei.
Mitchell freshman Orson Sinclair and senior Randy Coons grabbed an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Junior Chris McKeon and sophomore Michael Berman topped the Albertus Magnus duo of Ahmed Abdulateef and Nick Wiehler by an 8-3 final at No. 3 doubles.
Abdulateef picked up the Falcons' lone point of the day by defeating McKeon at No. 6 singles by finals of 6-4, 6-0.
Mitchell (4-2 overall) will next play at Newbury College on Wednesday, April 9 at 3:30 p.m. Albertus Magnus (5-4 overall) returns to action at St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) on Saturday, April 12 at 3:30 p.m.
