Men's Tennis Tops Wheelock
BOSTON – The Mitchell College men's tennis team closed out regular season conference play with a convincing 9-0 victory at Wheelock College on Saturday at the Winsor Courts.
Mitchell finished tied for first place in the conference standings with Regis College with 9-1 league records. The Mariners will await the draw for the upcoming NECC Championship, which will be unveiled by the conference on Sunday.
Freshman Rajan Bawa didn't drop a game at first singles and added a win at number one doubles to lead the Mariners. Bawa defeated Bobby Venning 6-0, 6-0 to improve to 7-1 in singles action and combined with junior Rocco Devona to take down Venning and Charles Armstrong-Hicks, 8-3. Devona also won all but one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles to Armstrong-Hicks to remain a perfect 9-0 in singles play.
Mitchell swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead prior to singles action. Junior Randy Coons combined with senior Alexander Fusco to blank the tandem of Miles Carey-Snow and Scott Sobel, 8-0. Senior Andrew Small and freshman Chris McKeon did not drop a game at number three doubles against Claire O'Donoghue and Emily Morgan with an 8-0 decision.
Small cruised past Carey-Snow at number three singles by scores of 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 8-2 in singles, while Fusco had little trouble improving his season singles mark to 10-0 at number four against O'Donoghue, winning 6-2, 6-3. Coons fought back to defeat Jeff Silveria at fifth singles, 7-5, 6-3 and junior Timothy Atkinson won at sixth singles for the Mariners over Irene Gonzalez, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Mitchell concludes its regular season on Monday, April 23 at Albertus Magnus College at 3:30 p.m.
