Tennis Tops Newbury 7-2
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The Newbury College men's tennis team fell to Mitchell College, 7-2, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Thursday afternoon.
Senior Rocco Devona led the Mariners to their fourth victory in fives matches with a two-set, 6-0, 6-0 win in first singles following a decisive, 8-1 win in first doubles alongside junior Zachary Simmons.
Mitchell took an early 2-1 lead after winning number one and two doubles. Devona and Simmons powered the Mariners at the top spot while Tim Atkinson and Randy Coons defeated Newbury's Alex Chappell and Gerard Font-Raventos by a score of 8-2. In the third doubles spot, the Nighthawks' Gabe Marcolini and Wayne Gethers defeated Chris McKeon and Kyle Scalley by a score of 8-6, to pull the score to 2-1 heading into singles play.
In the singles portion of the afternoon, Newbury's Joey Verdon picked up the only win for the Nighthawks by defeating McKeon in a tight three-set match, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3). Devona, Simmons, Atkinson, Coons and Scalley all picked up singles wins for Mitchell.
Newbury fell to 1-7 and 1-6 in the conference while Mitchell improved to 6-4 in NECC action, 7-5 overall.
Mitchell will next host Wheelock College on Saturday, April 20 at noon.
