Men's Tennis Closes Regular Season with Win at Wheelock
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team wrapped up regular season play on Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 victory at Wheelock College.
The Mariners improved to 8-4 overall and 6-4 in New England Collegiate Conference play, while the Wildcats finished their season with a 0-11 record, including 0-10 in league action.
Senior Randy Coons didn't drop a set in singles play and added a doubles victory to help lead Mitchell to victory. He blanked Wheelock's Kayla Arsenault at number four singles, 6-0, 6-0 to pick up his second win of the afternoon. Coons earlier teamed with freshman Adam Diaz to defeat Claire O'Donoghue and Arsenault at first doubles, 8-2, in pro-set format.
Mitchell freshman Orson Sinclair won his singles match at number one against O'Donoghue, 6-2, 6-1. Sinclair also combined with junior Chris McKeon at number two doubles to take down the Wildcat tandem of Will Spofford and Sunshine Shearer, 8-1. Spofford was beaten in singles play at number two by Michael Berman, 6-2, 6-4, while Shearer was beaten at third singles by McKeon, 6-1, 6-1.
Wheelock's Linda Le was defeated at fifth singles by Michael Edwards, 6-0, 6-0.
The Mariners have qualified for the 2014 NECC Championship and await the tournament seedings, which will be announced by the conference at the completion of regular season play.
