Men's Tennis Drops NECC Finale at Wheelock
DORCHESTER, Mass. - The Wheelock College men's tennis team swept Mitchell College in New England Collegiate College action on Sunday night by a 9-0 final.
The Wildcats improved to 4-8 (4-4 NECC) in their final home match of the season while the Mariners moved to 2-7 (2-6 NECC). Both teams have qualified for the NECC Championship, which begins with semifinal play on April 23.
Wheelock started off the contest strong as its first doubles pair of Arvin Hedayaty and Matthew Brown blanked Orson Sinclair and Michael Berman, 8-0. The home team continued that momentum when Jordan Bernard and Will Spofford defeated their second doubles foes of Graham Cavanaugh and Robert Pullan, 8-1. The last doubles match to finish up was in the third spot as Matthew Eason and Nicholas Fenton doubled up Nathaniel Bowe and Michael Hartley, 8-4.
Leading 3-0 heading into singles action, the Wildcats swept all six of their matches to close out the victory. Hedayaty, Brown, and Bernard each won in straight sets in the first three spots as they conceded just eight games total between them. Jill Crane continued the trend in her fifth singles match as she beat Pullan, 6-4, 6-1. Antonio Chavderov made it five straight-set victories in the sixth spot when he defeated Hartley, 6-3, 6-3. The most competitive match came in the fourth spot as Spofford led Bowe after taking the first set 6-0. However, he dropped the second set 7-5 and needed a 10-5 win in a super tiebreaker to secure the sweep.
