Men's Tennis Tops Becker 7-2
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team picked up a 7-2 victory over Becker College on Monday afternoon at the Mitchell College Tennis Courts.
The Mariners (8-2 overall, 5-1 NECC) posted their sixth straight win and swept the regular season series against the Hawks (4-7 overall, 3-4 NECC). Junior Kyle Carmona, sophomore Rocco Devona and junior Tyler Engleberg each won at both singles and doubles for Mitchell. Josh Rasmussen paced Becker on the day by winning both of its points.
Mitchell took the first two doubles points in convincing fashion, with Carmona and Devona posting an 8-0 victory at the top spot and Engleberg and junior Alexander Fusco teaming for an 8-2 win at the No. 2 position. The real battle came at No. 3 doubles where Rasmussen and partner Matt Graham outlasted Adam Samuels and Andrew Small for an 8-6 win.
The Mariners pulled away with solid singles play, winning at the top five spots to take the match. Carmona dispatched Jake Gilbert by scores of 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 while Devona topped Tim Howard at No. 2 by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
Becker's lone win in singles came at the No. 6 position where Rasmussen defeated Fusco by scores of 6-2, 6-2.
Mitchell will next host Wheelock College on Tuesday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m.
