Men's Tennis Tops Becker 7-2
NEW LONDON, Conn. –The Mitchell College men's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory in its home opener against Becker College on Monday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference match-up at the Mitchell Tennis Courts.
The Mariners (3-0 overall, 2-0 NECC) took two out of three doubles points to seize the early advantage and cemented the victory by picking up five wins in singles play. Becker dropped to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Both of Becker's points came at the top spots. Aaron Peterson and Connor Allison picked up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles while Peterson won in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) at No. 1 singles over Adam Diaz.
The rest of the points belonged to Mitchell, however, as Graham Cavanaugh, Michael Berman and Chris McKeon each recorded wins in both doubles and singles action. Cavanaugh teamed with Zack Rocheleau to win 8-6 at No. 2 doubles before coasting to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Berman and McKeon partnered in an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Berman needed a third set to defeat Allison while McKeon bested Francis Musick in straight sets.
Orson Sinclair and Michael Edwards also earned singles wins for the Mariners in the match. Sinclair topped Brittan Morris at the No. 2 position while Edwards split sets with Thomas Nourie at No. 5 before capturing the decisive third set.
Mitchell will next host Regis College on Thursday, April 9 at 3:30 p.m. Becker returns to action at UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m.
