Men's Tennis Stumbles at Regis
WESTON, Mass. – Regis College moved into a tie for the top spot in the New England Collegiate Conference with a 6-3 win over Mitchell College on Wednesday afternoon in men's tennis action.
The Pride improved to 10-6 overall and 7-1 in the NECC, while Mitchell dropped its first contest of the year and moved to 7-1 overall and 7-1 in league matches.
Regis took an early 2-1 lead in doubles play as the tandem of Michael Beluch and Andy White defeated junior Rocco Devona and senior Andrew Small, 8-4, in No. 1 doubles. Regis' Matthew Smolko and Mouhamed Diallo earned the second point of the day for the Pride with their 8-1 win over freshman Chris McKeon and junior Randy Coons at the third doubles position.
Mitchell grabbed its lone point of doubles play as freshman Rajan Bawa and senior Alexander Fusco won their No. 2 doubles match, 8-2, over Jeffrie Parrish and Sophorn Nop.
The Pride won four of the six singles matches to take home the 6-3 victory. Parrish picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Small in No. 3 singles, while Smolko earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles with his win over junior Timothy Atkinson. Devona and Fusco earned wins at second and fourth singles, respectively, to make it a 4-3 score with two singles matches left to be played.
Beluch earned the fifth and deciding point at No. 1 singles over Bawa as he rebounded from a 6-4 setback in the opening set to win the next two by scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Diallo picked up the sixth point of the day for Regis with his win in No. 6 singles that closed out the match.
Mitchell returns to action on Thursday, April 19 at home against Newbury College at 3:30 p.m.
