Men's Tennis Falls Short at Becker
WORCESTER, Mass. – Becker College held on for a 5-4 victory over Mitchell College in New England Collegiate Conference men's tennis action Thursday afternoon.
Both teams finished the conference season with records of 6-5 (4-4 NECC).
In top doubles action, Mitchell's Adam Diaz and Orson Sinclair defeated Connor Allison and Aaron Peterson, 8-6. The Hawks captured number two doubles when the combo of Thomas Lanphear and Thomas Nourie bested Graham Cavanaugh and Zack Rocheleau, 8-6. Becker took a 2-1 lead into singles action after Brittan Morris and Francis Musick battled past Anthony Drake and Chris McKeon in third doubles play, 8-4.
Cavanaugh rebounded from his doubles loss by defeating Peterson in top singles action, 6-2, 6-4. Mitchell also took number two singles when Diaz earned his second win of the day, defeating Lanphear in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. The Mariners also earned the victory in number six singles when McKeon downed Oliver Awat in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Becker stayed in the match as Allison outlasted Michael Berman in number four singles, 6-2, 7-5. That left the Mariners with a 4-3 lead with two matches remaining on the court.
The Hawks won both points to seal the victory. After dropping the first set 6-4 to Sinclair, Morris rallied to take the final two sets 6-3, 6-4 to earn the win in number three singles. Nourie gave the Hawks their fifth win of day when he clipped Michael Edwards in number five singles, 6-2, 7-6.
Both Mitchell and Becker have qualified for the NECC Championship and will await the announcement of seedings. The four-team tournament will be held on April 25-26 at the site of the highest seeds.
