Men's Tennis Blanks Newbury
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Newbury College men's tennis team fell to NECC opponent Mitchell College Thursday afternoon by a final score of 9-0.
The victory pushed Mitchell's (7-2 overall, 4-1 NECC) win streak to five while the Nighthawks dropped to 0-7 on the season. Junior Kyle Carmona led the way for the Mariners picking up wins in both number one singles and number one doubles without dropping a single set.
Mitchell started off the contest on the right foot, as it swept Newbury in doubles, 3-0. In the number one doubles spot, Carmona and partner Rocco Devona defeated Newbury's Gerard Font-Raventos and Benjamin Weiner, 8-0, while teammates Tyler Engleberg and Alexander Fusco beat Jarryl McKey and Tim Anderson, 8-1. Rounding out doubles play, Mitchell's Adam Samuels and Andrew Small defeated Sean Haight and Ryan Maliff, 8-1 also.
In singles play, Carmona continued to dominate as he defeated Font-Raventos in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. The number two singles game would prove to be the most competitive as Weiner battled Devona in two sets but eventually fell 6-3, 6-2. In the other singles matches, Engleberg defeated McKey, 6-2, 6-0 in the third spot, Samuels defeated Anderson 6-0, 6-0 in the forth singles, Small defeated Alex Amylon in the fifth spot, 6-1, 6-0 and Fusco defeated Marc Jean-Jacques in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at the sixth spot.
Mitchell will next host Wheelock College on Saturday, April 23 at noon.
