Men's Tennis Wins 7-2 vs. Becker
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team posted its fourth straight victory with a 7-2 triumph over Becker College on Saturday afternoon at the Mitchell College Tennis Courts.
The Mariners (4-0 overall, 4-0 NECC) began the day by taking two of three doubles contests for an early 2-1 advantage. Junior Rocco Devona teamed with senior Andrew Small at the top spot to defeat Tim Howard and Branden Parkhouse by an 8-3 final. Mitchell seniors Tyler Engleberg and Alexander Fusco picked up an 8-4 win at No. 2, but Becker's David Graham and Jason Alera salvaged a point at No. 3 by a 9-8 (7-1) final in a tiebreaker.
Mitchell picked up wins in the first three singles matches to quickly seal the victory. Devona topped Howard 6-0, 6-3 at the top spot while Engleberg downed Jake Gilbert 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Fusco provided the winning point at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Brian Piquette.
Small and junior Randy Coons were also victorious for the Mariners at the No. 3 and 6 spots, respectively. Graham picked up the lone singles point for the Hawks at No. 5, beating junior Timothy Atkinson in straight sets by 6-0, 6-2 finals.
Mitchell will next play Newbury College on Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. in a match that will be played at Regis College.
