Tennis Shuts Out Wheelock 9-0
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 win over Wheelock College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at the Mack Tennis Courts.
Mitchell had three points in the bag to start the match as Wheelock forfeited one doubles match and two singles matches due to lack of players. The Mariners then dropped only one game in the two doubles matches and took all four singles contests in straight sets.
Adam Diaz and Randy Coons picked up an 8-1 win over Claire O'Donoghue and Alex Miner at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles the duo of Michael Edwards and Chris McKeon shut out Kayla Arsenault and Linda Le by an 8-0 final.
The Mariners dominated singles play as no Mitchell player dropped more than two games in any set. Orson Sinclair handed O'Donoghue a 6-1, 6-2 defeat at the top singles position, and Michael Berman defeated Miner 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. McKeon and Edwards won at No. 3 and No. 4, respectfully, by posting matching 6-0, 6-0 scores over Arsenault and Le. The win for Edwards was the first singles victory of his career.
Mitchell (6-3 overall, 4-3 NECC) will next travel to Becker College on Tuesday, April 15 at 3 p.m. Wheelock (0-7 overall, 0-6 NECC) hosts Lesley University on Sunday, April 13 at 11 a.m.
