Men's Tennis Blanks Wheelock 9-0
BOSTON – Junior Zachary Simmons and freshman Graham Cavanaugh both won a pair of matches and didn't drop a game to lead the Mitchell College men's tennis team to a 9-0 victory over host Wheelock College in a New England Collegiate Conference contest on Saturday afternoon in a match at the Winsor Courts.
The Mariners improved to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in NECC play, while the Wildcats fell to 0-7 and 0-6.
Simmons and Cavanaugh combined to defeat the Wheelock pair of Dan Campbell and Ben Lewis, 8-0, at number one doubles. Simmons shut out Jeff Silveria at second singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Cavanaugh blanked Caelin Mooney, 6-0, 6-0, at the third singles spot.
Junior Randy Coons was also unblemished at sixth singles in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Campbell. He paired up with senior Rocco Devona to take number two doubles over Wheelock's duo of Charles Armstrong-Hicks and Silveria, 8-4. Devona also won at first singles over Armstrong-Hicks, 6-0, 6-2.
Senior Timothy Atkinson got by Claire O'Donoghue, 6-4, 6-3, at fourth singles after teaming with senior Kyle Scalley to win at number three doubles over Mooney and O'Donoghue, 8-2, earlier it the day. Sophomore Chris McKeon was the victor at fifth singles for Mitchell with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Lewis.
Mitchell will next host NECC foe Regis College on Monday, April 15 at 3:00 p.m.
