Men's Tennis Blanks Newbury 9-0
WESTON, Mass. - The Newbury College men's tennis program fell to Mitchell College, 9-0, Tuesday evening in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action.
Junior Rocco Devona and senior Andrew Small opened the match by sweeping second doubles, 8-0. Newbury's Gerard Font-Raventos and Robert Leng gave Mitchell seniors Tyler Engleberg and Alexander Fusco a good run in first doubles but succumbed to the 8-0 loss.
In the singles portion of the competition, the Nighthawks weren't going down without a fight and made the Mariners work hard for their fifth victory of the season.
After dropping the first set of third singles, 6-2, John Morgan nearly forced a decisive third set as he put up a battle against Small. Morgan took Small to 12 sets before falling, 7-5, in the second set.
Wayne Gethers, who was coming off his first singles victory of the year against Lesley University on Saturday, battled Fusco tightly in fourth singles. However, Fusco was able to come away with the 6-4, 6-1 victory.
Newbury fell to 0-5 on the season and 0-4 in conference action while Mitchell remained undefeated at 5-0 in the NECC.
Mitchell will next play at Regis College on Thursday, April 12 at 4:30 p.m.
