Men's Tennis Wins NECC Opener at Lesley
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Mitchell College recorded its second straight men's tennis win by an 8-1 final over Lesley University Wednesday evening in New England Collegiate Conference play at the Nicholas Athletics Center.
The Mariners took two out of three doubles matches before sweeping their way through the singles portion of the match to secure the victory. Mitchell moved to 2-0 overall (1-0 NECC) on the young season while Lesley dropped to 1-5 overall (1-3 NECC).
Mitchell's top pairing of sophomores Adam Diaz and Orson Sinclair bested the Lesley duo of Niko Marcolini and Billy Baker by a score of 8-2 before Mariners juniors Graham Cavanaugh and Zack Rocheleau raced to an 8-1 win over Josh Marcellino and Jack Tortorici in the second doubles flight.
Lesley's Ian Barber and James Webb earned their second straight victory at third doubles, posting an 8-5 decision over senior Chris McKeon and junior Michael Hartley.
Cavanaugh captured the victory in number two singles over Baker 6-1, 6-1 before Diaz earned his second win the evening over Marcolini, battling past the Lesley freshman by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Sinclair sealed the win for the Mariners with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Marcellino in the third singles match.
Mitchell junior Michael Berman topped Tortorici 6-1, 6-0 in number four singles while senior Michael Edwards swept Webb 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth flight. McKeon wrapped up the night with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the sixth and final match of the night.
Mitchell returns to action on Monday, April 6 at home against Becker College at 3:00 p.m.
