Regis Hands Men's Tennis First Loss
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Regis College came away with a 9-0 victory over Mitchell College on Thursday afternoon in the first meeting between the two schools in New England Collegiate Conference play this season.
The Pride (10-6 overall, 3-0 NECC) posted their fourth straight win of the spring and in the process handed the Mariners (3-1 overall, 2-1 NECC) their first loss. The two teams, which have combined to win six NECC titles, will square off again at Regis on April 16.
After sweeping through the doubles portion, Regis carried the momentum into singles play and won all but one match in straight sets. Michael Beluch defeated Adam Diaz at the top spot by finals of 6-4, 6-0 while Chris Harrow took care of Graham Cavanaugh by scores of 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Nathan Cohen earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Michael Hartley at No. 4 while Nick Hildreth and Jeremy Morgenbesser won at No. 5 and 6, respectively, without dropping a game.
Mitchell's Orson Sinclair put up a fight at the No. 3 position before falling to Matt Quattrociocchi. Sinclair took the first set 7-5 before dropping the second by the same margin, and in lieu of a third set the two played a 10-point tiebreaker. Quatrociocchi triumphed 12-10 in the tiebreaker to seal the sweep for the Pride.
Mitchell will next host Lesley University on Saturday, April 11 at 3:30 p.m. Regis returns to action at Newbury College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
