Men's Tennis Rolls in Season Opener Against Newbury
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team picked up a 9-0 victory in its season opener against Newbury College on Friday afternoon at the Mitchell Tennis Courts.
The Mariners took all three doubles points to start the match and went on to sweep the singles contests in straight sets. The match, in addition to being each team's first of the season, was also the first in NECC play this year.
Sophomore Rocco Devona led Mitchell with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Benjamin Weiner at No. 1 singles and teamed with junior Tyler Engleberg for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Engleberg played at No. 2 singles and dropped only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jarryl McKey.
Senior Adam Samuels and juniors Andrew Small and Alexander Fusco each picked up 6-0, 6-0 wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots, respectively. Freshman Matthew Markavage earned the final singles point at the No. 6 position by a 6-0, 6-1 final over Ryan Maliff.
Mitchell will next play at Albertus Magnus College on Monday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m.
