Men's Tennis Tops Becker 6-3
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team picked up a 6-3 victory over Becker College on Wednesday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at the Mitchell Tennis Courts.
Mitchell (5-5 overall, 4-4 NECC) earned a pair of points in doubles play before sealing the win by taking four of six singles matches. The Mariners won at the top two doubles spots and cruised to straight set wins at the top four singles positions. Becker (4-4 overall, 4-4 NECC) picked up wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 and 6 singles.
Senior Rocco Devona, junior Zachary Simmons and freshman Graham Cavanaugh all earned a pair of points on the day for the Mariners. Simmons and Cavanaugh teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles before moving on to post wins at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1) and 3 (6-1, 6-4) singles, respectively. Devona and junior Randy Coons earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, and the former didn't drop a game against Troy Scott at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-0).
Senior Timothy Atkinson earned Mitchell's final singles point with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 over Devon Dubuque. Becker's wins came from the duo of Dubuque and Jeffrey Labby at No. 3 doubles (8-5), Viktor Tuurala at No. 5 singles (6-3, 6-2) and Brittan Morris at No. 6 singles (6-3, 6-4).
Mitchell will next play at Newbury College on Thursday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m.
